Grade 3 – 12

The SLD section accommodates learners with specific barriers to learning and Autism (Level 1).

CAPS curriculum is followed and learners write the NSC examination with endorsement in Grade 12.

Application

All applications for Langerug School are dealt with via the Department of Education’s referral system.

Parents will therefore have to do the following:

Make an appointment with your child's class teacher/principal and explain that you want the school to refer your child to Langerug School. See that you have copies of all relevant reports of your child at hand.

The possible referral will then be discussed by the school's SBST.

The SBST of the school will then contact the relevant DBST from the district office. The DBST (psychologist, learning support teacher and/or social worker) will visit the school and assist the SBST with the possible application and the necessary assessments if needed.

Application for the section for learners with specific barriers to learning (CAPS curriculum) will be presented at the next screening meeting of Langerug School and discussed for consideration. Placement is subject to admission criteria and available space in the specific grade. Parents will then be contacted by the DBST/Langerug School to discuss the specific outcome. There is one screening meeting per term.

If your child is not in a school currently or receives homeschooling, you should contact the SLES section of the Cape Winelands District Office. Parents can contact the Cape Winelands District Office at 023 348 4600 to talk to the Head of the SLES section or the Senior Psychologist in this regard.

Admission criteria

Average cognitive functioning (follow mainstream curriculum).
The presence of significant and specific barriers to learning. Barriers to learning include among others: barriers with regard to reading, spelling, attention deficit and hyperactivity, emotional challenges, anxiety and Autism (Level 1).
The learner should preferably be identified as early as possible and should have the potential to benefit from the mainstream curriculum and programmes offered by the school.
The learner should be of school age.
For admission to the hostel the parent/guardian must be able to meet the financial requirements thereof.
Admission will be dependent upon Langerug School’s admission policy.

Practical factors inherent to the circumstances of the school should be taken into consideration when admitting learners.

These include the following:

Staff allocation for the school;
Reasonable space (classroom), facilities and other resources to accommodate the learner and provide in his/her educational needs.
