Autism section

The Autism section accommodates learners with Autism. This section does not follow the CAPS curriculum. Learners receive tuition according to Individual Support Plans (ISPs). This means that learners are taught and supported according to individual levels of functioning.

Individual Support Plans

At Langerug School’s Autism section learners are supported and receive tuition according to an Individual Support Plan (ISP).
  • Tuition per class varies from academic work to skills according to interest and level of functioning.
  • Each learner follows their own ISP (Individual Support Plan).
  • The focus is specifically on the learning of social skills.
  • Self-help and life skills form part of the support plans.
  • Positive communication between parents and educators takes high priority.
  • Maximum advantage is gained due to small class groups – maximum nine – plus assistance by a class assistant.
  • Tuition is applied one to one, as well as collectively during group activities.
  • The learning environment is structured.
  • A strict routine is followed.
  • A cool-down period and sensory breaks are allowed when learners need it.

Application

All applications to Langerug School are dealt with via the Department of Education’s referral system.
Parents will therefore have to do the following:

Make an appointment with your child's class teacher/principal and explain that you want the school to refer your child to Langerug School. See that you have copies of all relevant reports of your child at hand.

The possible referral will then be discussed by the school's SBST.

The SBST of the school will then contact the relevant DBST at the district office. The DBST (psychologist, learning support teacher and/or social worker) will visit the school and assist the SBST with the possible application and the necessary assessments if needed.

Applications for the Autism section (Individual Support Plans) will be sent to Langerug School by the Cape Winelands District Office to be placed on the school's database. Placement in the Autism section is subject to an observation period as well as available space in a specific class. Parents will be contacted by the school as soon as an Autism Outreach team from the Department of Education can do observations, provided there is space available for new placements. The potential learners will be discussed for consideration at a screening meeting, after which the parents will be contacted by Langerug School to discuss the specific outcome.

If your child is not in a school currently or receives homeschooling, you should contact the SLES section of the Cape Winelands District Office. Parents can contact the Cape Winelands District Office at 023 348 4600 to talk to the Head of the SLES section or the Senior Psychologist in this regard.

Admission criteria for autism

  • A diagnosis of autism is compulsory.
  • The learner should be of school age.
  • The learner should have an established toilet routine.
  • The learner should be able to function with a degree of independence, and he/she should not pose a threat to him or herself, or when there is interaction with another person.
  • The learner should not exhibit excessive destructive behaviour.
  • He/she should be able to function in a group.
  • It is essential that they are able to mimic others.
  • A certain degree of intrinsic motivation is important.
  • A learner should have the potential to benefit from the individual support plan and program offered by the school.
  • Learners between the ages of 12 and 16 will only be considered if they are currently enrolled at a school.
  • Admission will be dependent upon Langerug School’s admission policy.
Practical factors, inherent to the circumstances of the school, should be taken into account when admitting learners.
These include:
  • Staff allocation at the school;
  • Reasonable space (classroom), facilities and other resources to accommodate the learner and provide in his/her educational needs.
