Langerug School follows a holistic approach to the support of our learners, therefore we act as a multidisciplinary team when dealing with the variety of needs presented by the learners in our care.

Our Subjects

We offer six subjects, as dictated by the National Education Department in the CAPS curriculum:
  • Afrikaans Home Language
  • English First Additional Language
  • Mathematics
  • Natural Sciences and Technology
  • Social Sciences
  • Personal and Social Well-being

Support

Smaller class groups (maximum 14) follow an adapted and inclusive mainstream curriculum (CAPS) that allow individual attention to learners.

A structured learning environment

  • The area inside the classroom is optimally utilised with ample space between desks. Pages in work books are numbered and colour codes are used for different subjects.
  • Learners do not change classes, and a weekly timetable with a set school routine is followed.
  • Changes in the daily routine are kept to an absolute minimum.
  • A strict homework system is followed and the writing down of homework is checked.
  • Positive communication between parents and educator is ensured.
  • Specific intervention entails learning support (remedial teaching), reteaching and homework support classes.
  • An effective code of conduct enhances the development of self-motivation, self-assertion and leadership skills.
  • Sensory aids are used for concentration.
  • Cooling-down periods are allowed when needed.
  • Assessment accommodations are applied where needed.
  • Additional time is allowed to complete formal assessment tasks.
  • Therapeutic drumming is utilised to the advantage of the learners.
  • Regulating exercises and a music program form part of the daily program.

Technology

  • Technology is utilised during the presentation of lessons. Devices are used in class and during assessments so that the advantage of speech-to-text and text-to-speech technology are accessible to the learners.

Study methods

  • Support with learning is offered by means of summarised notes, mind maps, the use of keywords, as well as use of audio notes (where needed).
  • Study aid is offered in accordance with the timetable for the formal assessment tasks of a specific term.
