Assessments Accommodation

Assessment accommodations is support given during assessments (tests and exams) to learners with barriers to learning in order to provide them with an equal opportunity to achieve according to their potential.

Learnes receive assessment accommodations for the following deficits among others: problems with written expression (spelling, expression, motor skills/work speed, handwriting), reading abilities, organisation and structure, attention deficit, hyperactivity, extreme anxiety and other relevant medical conditions.

Langerug School models their assessment accommodation policy and the implementation thereof on the policy of the WCED and Department of Basic Education and its implementation.

Types of
Assessment Accommodations

Reader or computer

(Reading program: text-to-speech)

The learner’s exam paper is read to him\her during assessment. The alternative is that the learner makes use of a reading program (text-to-speech) on a computer. This is also allowed in class to increase continuous accessibility to the curriculum for the learner with reading barriers.

Scribe or computer

(speech-to-text function)

The learner’s answers are written down for him/her during assessment. The alternative is that the learner makes use of a speech-to-text function (voicetyping) on a computer. This is also allowed in classes to increase continuous accessibility to the curriculum for the learner with barriers regarding written expression.

Use of computer: Typing

The reasons for recommending that a computer be used, include problems with planning, handwriting, writing speed and motor skills. Learners who use the computer for these reasons may, according to the guidelines of the WCED, not make use of spell check or the internet during formal assessments.

Prompt/Structural support

  • Structural support, as well as support with organisation, may be indicated in cases of extreme attention deficit, anxiety, problems with spatial orientation, planning, and getting started. Structural support is of therapeutic value, as the learner acquires certain skills through repetition which he/she could apply by themselves later.
  • Structural support – just like receiving any other accommodation – may only be granted after a meeting where all subject educators and auxiliary services staff had been present.

Additional time

  • A concession of up to 20 minutes per hour is granted to learners who qualify. This concession and time allocation are in accordance with the WCED’s policy document pertaining to assessment accommodations.
  • No time limit applies to assessments for learners up to grade 6.
