Auxiliary Services
The responsibilities of each role player are as follows:
Educational psychologist
- Dealing with the referrals of the Education Department received via the district office (Cape Winelands)
- Dealing with enquiries regarding referrals and admissions
- Psychometric assessment where needed
- Guidance and support to parents
- Therapy for learners with emotional challenges
- Resource centre for mainstream schools – assistance with identification of and support to learners with barriers to learning
Occupational therapists
- Standardised and qualitative evaluation of learners in order to determine and provide for individual needs
- Barriers to learning may include the following:
- Sensory integration problems
- Challenges regarding attention deficit and hyperactivity (ADHD)
- Autism spectrum
- Emotional factors
- Neurological factors (e.g. trauma during birth)
- Individual and group support to facilitate holistic development with regard to skills needed for school and learning
- Specific assistance to learners in the Autism section
- Drawing up and implementing of individual programmes for use in the classroom, as well as during individual and group therapy
- The occupational therapy department also serves as resource centre for mainstream schools and their learners.
Speech therapist
- Learners receive individual therapy, group therapy or therapeutic input for a whole class, depending on the need. Support is typically rendered to learners with regard to the following, among others:
- Specific language deficits and dyslexia
- Halting language and associated problems
- Verbal developmental apraxia, cleft lip and/or palate, problems with articulation and/or phonological deviations
- Auditory processing deficits and loss of hearing
- Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC)
- Autism spectrum
- Auditory screening where needed
- Referrals to an audiologist should further support be required
- The speech therapy department also serves as resource centre for mainstream schools and their learners.
Remedial educators
- Upon admission learners are evaluated by means of diagnostic tests to determine possible reading, spelling or writing problems.
- Recommendations regarding assessment accommodations are made on the grounds of such evaluations, e.g. the use of a computer (text-to-speech and/or speech-to-text), or the allocation of a reader/scribe/prompt, as well as additional time.
- Learners with reading and spelling problems receive individual assistance to cope with deficits and find techniques to circumvent these challenges.
- Learners receive assistance with study methods.
- Support with regard to didactics is provided.
- Help is provided with the moderation of exam papers.
- The remedial educators work closely together with the other staff members so that learners can also be supported in the classroom.
IE team
Langerug School is a resource centre and as such has an inclusive education team at its disposal, comprising an educational psychologist, occupational therapist and learning support teacher.
They work in schools in the district with the aim of supporting learners in the mainstream with barriers to learning.
